This is a picture of me from when I was 8 months pregnant. I stretched some spandex onto a wooden frame and cut a hole in the middle, stuffed my giant belly through, and photographed it. The printed result is a sort of optical illusion of depth, where the busy fabric background heightens the protrusion of the round belly, which is of course is actually flat, because now it’s a printed photograph. Recently, I mounted this image to foam core, cut out the bellybutton, and attached it to a small motor. The bellybutton spins around and around in a comical tribute to the slapstick insanity of growing a person in the middle of your body - aka “pregnancy.”
